Buying & Paying in Macedonian

This free Macedonian lesson teaches buying & paying as part of the Market & Bargaining course on OpaLingo. Navigate the пазар (market) — ask prices, say something is too expensive, negotiate a discount, and pay correctly. Builds on numbers and shopping vocabulary. You'll learn 4 Macedonian words, including Ќе земам ова (I'll take this), Два парчиња, ве молам (Two pieces, please), Платам со картичка (I'm paying by card), кусур (change (money)), each with native audio pronunciation, interactive flashcards, and a quiz to check your progress. Spoken by roughly 1.5 million people, mainly in North Macedonia, Macedonian is a South Slavic language with a 31-letter Cyrillic alphabet. Its spelling is completely phonetic: each letter always represents the same sound, so reading and pronunciation come quickly once you know the alphabet.

Word by word

  • Ќе земам ова is the Macedonian for “I'll take this”, pronounced “Ḱe zemam ova”.
  • Два парчиња, ве молам — pronounced “Dva parčinja, ve molam” — means “Two pieces, please” in English.
  • Платам со картичка means “I'm paying by card”. Say it as “Platam so kartička”, exactly as the Cyrillic is written.
  • кусур translates to “change (money)” and is pronounced “kusur”.

How to practice buying & paying in Macedonian

Play the native audio for each entry and say it aloud — hearing and speaking together builds pronunciation much faster than silent reading. Macedonian's phonetic Cyrillic spelling means what you see is exactly what you say, so sounding words out reinforces both reading and memory at once. After the introduction, the lesson moves into interactive flashcards and finishes with a quick quiz; coming back for a short review over the next few days locks the material into long-term memory.
